Port of Burgas

Opened to commercial shipping in 1903, the Port of Burgas is one of Bulgaria's major Black Sea ports, part of the Trans-European Transport Network and just a short walk from the city centre.

The Port of Burgas is one of Bulgaria's major ports on the Black Sea. The site, at the head of Burgas Bay, has been used since antiquity, but the modern port dates from a decision by the Bulgarian government in 1894, sixteen years after the country's liberation from Ottoman rule. Construction reshaped the former Cape Burgas, where Bulgaria's first seaport lighthouse came into service in 1899. The port was opened to commercial shipping in 1903 in the presence of Prince Ferdinand I. As early as the 19th century, Burgas ranked among the Black Sea ports handling the most cargo. Today it is part of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) and remains one of the city's economic engines. Close to the city centre, the port waterfront offers a fine view of maritime activity and of the bay, best enjoyed on a stroll along the seafront.
