Burgas Regional Historical Museum

Founded in 1912, the Burgas Regional Historical Museum traces the history of the city and its region through four exhibitions: archaeology, ethnography, history and natural science.

The Burgas Regional Historical Museum (RIM – Burgas) is devoted to the history of the city and its region. It was founded in 1912 as a private museum of the "Debelt" archaeological society, set up by intellectuals keen to uncover the past of the Burgas lands; its first head was Pavel Vodenicharov. During the first half of the 20th century, its collections grew with archaeological finds from the surrounding area, notably from Sozopol, Nessebar and the Karnobat district. In 1946 the museum was handed over to the municipality and became the People's Museum of Burgas, led by the archaeologist Ivan Galabov, whose research laid the foundations of archaeology in south-eastern Bulgaria. Today the museum is spread across four exhibitions housed in four buildings in the city centre: archaeology, ethnography, history and natural science. An ideal stop to discover the many facets of the Bulgarian coast's heritage.
